From the Editor

Freezing February!!

Hopefully you have managed to keep warm since our last issue! Whether it is exercising away those Christmas calories or just curling up with a cup of cocoa...we are happy that you have found time to read The Kingsdale Times. Our reporters have been hard at work to bring you this month’s articles.

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting THE GREEN SUMMIT at Kingsdale this year on May 18th. This will be the 3rd Lester B. Pearson summit and we are hoping to have many elementary schools taking part in a whole day of fun, eco- oriented workshops, and meeting other students involved in eco-friendly projects at their own schools. On the day of the summit we will be having a fundraiser (through Super Recyclers), collecting USED CLOTHING AND TEXTILES TO RECYCLE. So when you start your Spring cleaning...bring your unwanted items to school to help raise money for our green initiatives! THANK YOU!!

More exciting news!!! We will be holding the first Kingsdale Variety Show at the end if the year. We want to invite any student who might have a talent of any kind….SINGING...DANCING….MAGIC TRICKS...GYMNASTICS...PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT... anything you are good at. Then, over March break, decide what you want to showcase...practice ...practice...practice and after the break we will be holding auditions for the show. If you are more a “BACKSTAGE” kind of person we have all sorts of things we need your help with there!! WATCH OUT FOR MORE NEWS ABOUT THE SHOW!!!

So please enjoy this issue of the Kingsdale Times and see you next time!

Movie of the Month

Power Rangers

“Go Go Power Rangers!”... this movie will blow your mind. This movie is two hours and four minutes of action and drama. I loved this movie so much, it kept me interested the whole time. The five teenagers return to the mine and discover an ancient spaceship where they meet Alpha 5 and Zordon's consciousness. They inform the teenagers about the Rangers history and Rita, warning that they have eleven days until Rita has her full power, finds the Zeo Crystal, and uses it to destroy life on Earth!!!! The five leave the ship with no intention of returning until Zordon pleads with Jason(the Red Ranger) to convince the team. The five return to train the next day, but they cannot morph. They spend the next week training against simulated “Putties” and trying unsuccessfully to morph. To inspire the Rangers, Alpha reveals the Zords. Zack( the black ranger) takes his Zord out for a joyride and almost kills the other Rangers when he crashes it. This angers Jason, and they fight. While trying to separate the two, Billy(the blue ranger) spontaneously morphs. However, when he becomes conscious of it, the armor disappears.

Song of the Month

I will survive (Gloria Gaynor)

At first, I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong and I learned how to get along

And so you're back from outer space
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I'd have known for just one second you'd be back to bother me

Go on now go, walk out the door, just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you're the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
You think I'd crumble? You think I'd lay down and die?

Oh, no, not I, I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love, I know I'm still alive
I've got my life to live, and I've got all my love to give
And I'll survive, I, I , I will survive

It took all my strength not to fall apart
Trying with all my mind to mend my broken heart
I spent, so many nights feeling sorry for myself
Oh, I used to cry but now I hold my head up high

And you see me, somebody new
Not that lonely little person still in love with you
Now you come dropping in expecting me to be free
Now I'm saving all my loving for someone who's loving me

Go on go, walk out the door, turn around now
You're not welcome anymore
You're the one, who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
Did you think I'd crumble? Did you think I'd lay down and die?

Oh, no, not I, I will survive
Long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got my life to live, and all my love to give
And I'll survive, I, I , I will survive
Go on go, walk out the door, turn around now
You're not welcome anymore
You're the one, who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
Did you think I'd crumble? Did you think I'd lay down and die?

Oh, no, not I, I will survive
Long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got my life to live, and all my love to give
And I'll survive, I, I , I will survive

Current Events

  • The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea will officially kick off with an opening ceremony at 8:00 pm local time on Friday, February 9. Among the thousands of competitors, representing 93 countries, participating in the parade will be twenty-two athletes from North Korea. Though the country’s last-minute decision to compete in the international multi-sport event, that ends on February 25, is certainly significant, what is even more so is the January 19 announcement that the two Koreas will march under the same flag.

Also, in a historic first, twelve North Korean athletes will form a joint women’s ice hockey team with South Korea. The other ten will compete in a variety of events including figure skating, short track speed skating, Alpine skiing, and cross-country skiing. North Korea will also send a troupe of cheerleaders to perform alongside other nations at the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as several cultural artists who will impress the residents of Seoul and Gangneung with taekwondo demonstrations and orchestra performances

Follow these historic Olympics at school and with your family!

  • On Wednesday, February 14 many of us will shower our loved ones with cards, chocolates, flowers, and even expensive jewelry. The celebration of love as we know it, developed in 1861 when candy maker Richard Cadbury came up with the brilliant idea of selling chocolates in heart-shaped packages. Valentine’s Day has since evolved into one of the biggest consumer spending days of the year.

The National Retail Federation expects the 55% of Americans celebrating the holiday in 2018, to expend an average of $143.56 for a total of $19.6 billion, up from $18.2 billion last year. While buying gifts for the people we love is a great way to show our appreciation, it is not the only way. Here are some fun and unusual traditions from around the world.

  • RZ Piscium, a star located 550 light-years away in the constellation Pisces, has long intrigued researchers with its strange “winking” behavior. During the erratic episodes, which last as long as two days, the celestial body becomes about ten times dimmer and emits a larger than normal amount of energy at infrared wavelengths, indicating the presence of enormous dust clouds.

Over the years, there have been various theories about the cause of the periodic debris. Some astronomers thought that RZ Piscium is a young sun-like star in the midst of a dense asteroid belt that is prone to frequent collisions, resulting in the dust. Others, however, maintained that RZ Piscium is much older than our 4.6-billion-year-old Sun and is beginning its transition into the red giant stage. They believed that as the aging star was growing, it was destroying planets in the nearby orbits, resulting in the massive amounts of dust.
